Joy Rebel Wellness
A Joy Rebel Wellness Journey.
In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining a sense of well-being can be challenging. My wellness journey has been a path of discovery, balance, and self-improvement, centered around key elements: plenty of sleep, meditation, daily walking in nature, creativity, managing sensory stimulation, and eating whole natural foods. I also incorporate daily stretching/yoga, camping, walking barefoot, cold showers, natural mineral hot spring soaks, and avoiding alcohol. I hope sharing my experiences will inspire others to embark on their own journey toward holistic well-being. No two journeys are identicle; find what works for you and run (or walk) with it.

The Healing Power of Sleep

Sleep is often underrated, but its importance cannot be overstated. My journey began with recognizing the need for ample sleep. Apparently, I have always been an excellent sleeper. (Thanks, mom.) I attribute this to being so highly sensitive that I simply shut down and go offline at a certain time every day. But, committing to a consistent bedtime (9 PM) and waking up at the same time every day (5 AM) transformed my life. This routine has granted me more energy, improved my mood, and heightened my productivity.
Winding down in the evening has become a cherished ritual. I avoid screens before bed, read an actual paper book, and do some light yoga and stretching. These habits signal my body that it’s time to rest. Rising early, while initially challenging, now feels natural and invigorating, setting a positive tone for the day ahead. I look forward to waking, drinking coffee, meditating, and walking on the trails near my house.
Peace Through Meditation

Meditation has been a cornerstone of my wellness practice. Incorporating it into my daily routine has provided profound benefits. I started meditating when I was 18, and had a pretty consistent practice untiI my first child was born (29.) About 10 years ago, I became consistent again, and rarely miss a day. Various meditation techniques, from Vipassana to Yoga Nidra, have helped me find calmness and clarity.
Meditation reduces stress, improves focus, and enhances self-awareness. It’s a daily retreat where I connect with my inner self, fostering a sense of calm that permeates the rest of my day. This practice has been instrumental in managing anxiety and sensory overshelm.
Daily Walking in Nature

Some people walk, and others are Walkers. I am a walker. I walk every single day I can, right after my morning meditation. Raining; I walk. Snowing; I walk. 95 degrees; I wake up earlier to walk in the cool morning air. Walking has become an essential part of my daily routine. My passion (obsession) with walking began very early in my life; during high school, I either rode my horse or walked in the woods after school. I began doing long-distance hikes and backpacks at 19. If I don’t have an adventure planned, after waking, coffee, and meditating, I head out for a walk; five miles to be exact. The physical benefits are clear—improved cardiovascular health and increased stamina—but the mental benefits are equally significant.
Walking provides time for reflection and mindfulness. I choose routes in nature, where the sights and sounds enhance my experience. Lucky for me, there is a national forest trailhead in my neighborhood. This daily habit not only keeps me fit but also nurtures my mental and emotional well-being.
Embracing Creativity

Creativity is a vital component of my wellness journey, as well. Engaging in creative activities—whether painting, writing, or crafting a piece of jewelry—allows me to express myself and relieve stress. These creative outlets are not just hobbies; they are essential to my mental health.
I’ve found that creativity fosters a sense of accomplishment and joy. Working on creative projects, no matter how small, brings a unique satisfaction. It’s a reminder that taking time to create something beautiful or meaningful is a valuable aspect of life. Entering the flow state helps reduce stress by curbing self-judgment, increasing motivation, and allowing a direct line to joy.
Managing Sensory Stimulation

In a world filled with constant sensory input, managing sensory stimulation is crucial for many people, especially introverted, neurodivergent, and HSPs. I’ve learned to recognize the signs of encroaching sensory overload and take steps to mitigate its effects. Creating a sensory-friendly environment at home, with quiet spaces without clutter, and soothing colors, has made a significant difference.
I also practice regular “sensory breaks” throughout the day. These breaks might involve closing my eyes for a few minutes, listening to music that I know will calm me, or simply stepping outside for fresh air. I’ also ‘m fortunate enough to work from home in a beautiful art studio with glass doors overlooking a natural environment. Acknowledging and respecting my sensory needs has been essential in maintaining my overall well-being.
Eating Whole, Natural Foods

I eat a diet centered around whole, natural foods. I am not a vegetarian, but I choose to focus on nutrient-dense, unprocessed food. The benefits of a whole, primarily vegetable diet are physical and mental energy, super digestion, and overall well-being.
This dietary choice not only nourishes my body but also aligns with my values of living a simpler, more natural, and balanced life.
Avoiding Alcohol

Choosing to avoid alcohol has been a conscious decision to prioritize my health and clarity. While moderate alcohol consumption is often deemed socially acceptable, I’ve found that mostly eliminating it enhances my physical and mental well-being. There is significant research linking alcohol to poor gut health. While traveling in Spain and Portugal the last two years, I chose to try the local wine and Sangria, and did not regret it. 🍷
Without alcohol, I sleep better, think more clearly, and feel more positive and joyful. It’s a choice that supports my overall wellness and aligns with my commitment to living a balanced, healthy life.
Daily Stretching and Yoga

Incorporating daily stretching and yoga into my routine has been transformative. Stretching helps alleviate muscle tension, improve flexibility, and prevent injuries. Yoga, in particular, combines physical postures with breath control and meditation, offering a holistic approach to well-being.
Practicing yoga daily has strengthened my body, improved my posture, and enhanced my mental clarity. It’s a time where I connect deeply with my breath and body, fostering a sense of inner peace and balance.
I stretch and do yoga for about 30 minutes each evening before bed. Occasionally, I will go to a class at the local climbing gym.
Embracing Solitude

In a world that often values constant connectivity, I have discovered the profound benefits of solitude. I would call myself an extreme introvert; needing large swaths of solitude to be creative, and function optimally. Taking time to be alone allows me to recharge, reflect, and engage in deep introspection. Solitude provides a space to listen to my inner voice and cultivate a stronger sense of self.
Spending time alone in nature, meditating, or simply sitting quietly has become a vital part of my routine. These moments of solitude help me manage stress, enhance creativity, and maintain emotional balance. I value my own company and do not feel apologetic about this; it’s how I am wired.
The Importance of Human Connection

While my wellness journey has emphasized solitude and personal reflection, I’ve also come to appreciate the vital role of human connection. As a highly sensitive person (HSP) and introvert, I find groups (large and small) and high-stimulation environments overwhelming. However, low-stimulation quality time with individual friends and family members has proven to be incredibly nourishing for my well-being.
Spending time with loved ones in one-on-one settings allows for deeper, more meaningful interactions. These intimate moments foster stronger bonds and provide emotional support that large social gatherings often lack. Whether it’s having a heartfelt conversation over a cup of tea, enjoying a quiet hike with a friend, or simply being present with a family member, these connections enrich my life in profound ways.
Engaging in these low-stimulation activities ensures that I can maintain my energy levels and emotional balance while still reaping the benefits of human connection. It’s a delicate balance, but one that enhances my overall sense of happiness and fulfillment. Prioritizing these individual connections has taught me that even as an introvert, nurturing relationships is an essential part of a holistic wellness journey
Camping and Being in Nature

Regularly spending time in nature has been an essential aspect of my wellness journey. Camping trips allow me to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the natural one. The tranquility of the wilderness, the fresh air, and the sounds of nature are incredibly soothing.
Being in nature reduces stress, boosts mood, and enhances creativity. It’s a reminder of the simplicity and beauty of the world around us, providing a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of modern society.
Walking Barefoot

Walking barefoot, or “earthing,” as people are calling it now, has been a thing I’ve always done. I believe we are meant to walk without shoes if we can. I remember, as a kid, walking barefoot everywhere. As and adult I only wear shoes if I have to. Feeling the earth beneath my feet connects me to nature and has numerous health benefits. It improves balance, strengthens foot muscles, and promotes better posture.
Moreover, walking barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or soil is believed to reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being. It’s a simple yet powerful way to connect with the earth.
Cold Showers and Icy Foot Soaks

I will jump in an icy alpine lake whenever I get the chance. Otherwise, I fit cold showers into my routine. While the initial shock can be challenging, the benefits are well worth it. Cold showers improve circulation, boost the immune system, and increase alertness.
They also promote mental resilience and reduce muscle soreness after workouts. Embracing the discomfort of cold showers has taught me to push beyond my comfort zones and appreciate the vitality they bring.
After a hike, I will soak my feet in an ice bath after a warm mineral soak. Soaking just the feet has the same benefits as a full ice dunk or cold shower.
Natural Mineral Hot Springs and Foot Soaks

Soaking in natural mineral hot springs is a luxurious way to relax and heal. The warm, mineral-rich waters soothe sore muscles, improve circulation, and promote skin health. These soaks provide a natural way to detoxify the body and reduce stress.
Visiting natural wild hot springs is one of my favorite things to do while on a road trip. It’s not just about physical relaxation but also mental rejuvenation. The serene environment, depending on where you go, and therapeutic waters offer a perfect introvert’s activity.
After a hike, I fill a foot bath with hot water and a combination of Epsom Salt, Dead Sea Salt, Pink Himalayan Salt, and lavender oil. I alternate the mineral foot soak with the icy foot bath. So amazing.
Choosing and Sharing Joy

In addition to the practices mentioned, choosing joy has been instrumental in my wellness journey. Joy and gratitude are not mere emotions; they are powerful mindsets that can profoundly impact our overall well-being. I do understand some people have easier access to joy as a baseline state. I feel grateful I can access joy so easily.
Joy is a state of being that transcends temporary happiness. It is a deep-rooted sense of contentment and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. Joy is in the present moment: the warmth of the sun on my face, my child’s laughter, a sunset, the way light filters through leaves. These small joys add up and create a tapestry of positivity.
My wellness journey is an ongoing process of growth and self-discovery. By prioritizing sleep, meditation, walking, creativity, yoga, nature, barefoot walking, cold showers, hot spring soaks, and a natural diet, I’ve cultivated a lifestyle that supports my physical, mental, and emotional health. I encourage anyone reading this to consider their own well-being and explore these elements. Wellness is a personal journey, and each step you take brings you closer to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
